Scarlet Tie Editing

Content Editing: The content edit is where we check for factual errors, contradictions, and inconsistencies. If the content is fictional, we do checks for contradictions, factual errors, inconsistencies and discrepancies in the plot, character, or dialogue. We check for tense, and ‘head hopping’. We ensure the theme has been developed (developmental editing) properly, or whether the sub-plots have been well integrated into the storyline. We make sure it is clear which character is talking during dialogue. We may suggest moving scenes around to improve the story or suggest adding/deleting some things. However, the decision to accept our suggestions and changes is always the authors, and any new scenes will be in the author’s own words. The manuscript is always the author’s own work. We will NOT re-write scenes for you.

It is unavoidable when content editing to not notice other errors that would be found during a copy edit/proofread, and they will be fixed as we come across them, but as this is not what we are focused on, it is inevitable some will be missed.

Copy Editing: When we copy edit a manuscript we check for spelling, syntax, capitalization, punctuation, verb tenses and other grammatical errors. We also check for continuity, sentence structure, paragraph lengths, word choices, missed words, overuse of the same word and repetition of the same point.  The copy editor may spot something you chose to ignore when the content editor found it, when this happens, take the time to reconsider, two editors would not point out the same thing if there wasn’t something not quite right with it.

Proofreading: Proofreading includes fixing errors: grammar, punctuation, improper word choices etc, and spots any final errors in formatting such as layout, font, spacing etcetera. As with the copy editor, the proofreader may spot something on a previous edit. Again, take the time to reconsider.
